The License
A legal marriage within North Carolina, whether civil or religious, can only occur if a marriage license has been issued. In fact, you can’t get married without it.

The license is secured from a county Register of Deeds office and is valid throughout the state for 60 days after it is issued. Persons 21 years old or older may validate their personal identification with a Driver’s License. Persons between the ages of 18 and 21 years may marry without the consent of a parent or guardian, but will need a Birth Certificate. There is no longer a blood test requirement or waiting period.

• Both you and your fiancé should be present at the time of making application for a marriage license
• Picture ID is required of each, i.e. Drivers License or certified copy of Birth Certificate
• Each is required to present their Social Security card or documentary proof of their Social Security number, i.e. W-2 form, payroll stub, or a statement from the Social Security Office stating their Social Security number.
• The legal age for marriage is 18 years. However, REVonCall will not marry any individual under the age of 21 with out premarital counseling.
• The marriage license is valid for sixty (60) days from the date of issuance
• The office hours for most County Register of Deeds offices are 8:00–5:00 p.m. To insure that issuance is completed by the 5:00 p.m. closing time, you should be in the office no later than 4:00 p.m.
